A bettor profited close to $500,000 on the ouster of Venezuela's president just before it was officially announced, raising questions about potential gains made from non-public details of American actions.

Changing Odds in Wagers

Wagers on Polymarket, a crypto-powered platform, that the leader would be removed from office by the close of the month increased in the hours before former President Trump declared on January 3rd that the Venezuelan leader had been apprehended.

One account, which joined the platform in December and placed four wagers, all on political events in Venezuela, made more than $436,000 from a modest bet of $32.5K.

The identity is unknown. The anonymous account had only a blockchain identifier for identification.

Market Signals Before Public Statement

Platform data shows that users assessed the probability of a political change at just under 7% in the late afternoon of Friday, January 2nd.

However the odds had climbed to eleven percent by the end of the day and surged in the early hours of the next day, indicating a sharp shift in market sentiment just before the official statement was made.

"This particular bet has all the hallmarks of a bet based on inside information," stated an industry expert.

A small number of other individuals also earned significant sums from bets on the same outcome.

Regulatory Scrutiny Intensifies

Politicians are starting to take note.

Proposed legislation presented on recently would prevent public officials from placing bets on forecasting platforms if they have "insider details" related to a wager.

The Prediction Market Landscape

Forecasting platforms have surged in popularity in recent years, with participants able to predict everything from sports to current affairs.

The industry were examined under the Biden administration. Yet it has found a more favorable environment during the current presidency.

Using confidential knowledge is a crime in the stock market, but there are less oversight in the prediction market arena.

A company executive for a competing service said their site "has clear rules against trading on insider information of any form."
