A two-month voyage around the Australian Coast has been cancelled in the wake of the fatal incident of an older lady who was left behind by the vessel on a remote tropical isle.

Suzanne Rees had been hiking on the remote island with fellow passengers from the cruise ship, but broke off from the group for a break. The ship sailed away leaving her and returned after some time after the personnel became aware the woman was not present.

A major search operation located her body the next day.

Authorities are examining the tragedy, together with investigators and the official investigator.

Chief Executive of the voyage organizer stated that passengers and personnel on the Coral Adventurer were told that the rest of the journey had been cancelled due to the "unfortunate death and earlier technical problems".

Through an announcement, he further stated that travelers would be given a complete reimbursement, and said the company was working "to arrange the travel back of the individuals via private aircraft".

Regulatory bodies also published an revised communication, and said they had "issued a notice to the Master" prohibiting any new passengers from entering the ship.

The official said that they would visit the vessel in the port city upon its arrival.

Chronology of Occurrences

The vessel first departed Cairns on 24 October, and was just two days into the voyage at the moment of the senior passenger's demise. Lizard Island was the first stop on the journey.

Guests on the ship - who typically pay substantial amounts of money to join the expedition - were taken there for a shore visit with the option of hiking or snorkeling.

Family Reaction

The child of the elderly passenger said that her relatives was "stunned and saddened that the liner left Lizard Island after an organised tour without my mother".

Through her comments, she described her mum as an "active octogenarian" who was a participant of a walking club.

"According to scant information we have been told, it looks that there was a breakdown of attention and basic judgment," she mentioned.

She added that she hoped the inquiry would be able to determine what "the company should have performed that might have preserved Mum's existence".

"Based on information from the investigators that it was a very hot period, and she took sick on the uphill trek," she revealed.

"She was asked her to return, unescorted. Then the boat sailed away, apparently without doing a passenger count.

"At some stage in that sequence, or not long after, she passed away, by herself."

Operator Response

In a statement, the CEO affirmed that the operator was "working closely with officials to assist their inquiry".

He said that the company was "very regretful that this has occurred" and had provided its complete assistance to the loved ones.

Cruise Industry Procedures

The ship accommodates up to a hundred twenty passengers with nearly fifty crew, according to corporate data. It was specially constructed to reach remote areas of the Australian shoreline and is equipped with "small boats" - minor craft used to take individuals on land visits.

Events such as this are rare, and passenger vessels have protocols to document which travelers are boarding or disembarking, according to travel authorities.

"Leaving covertly or [back] aboard simply isn't an possibility," one expert commented.

Vessel operators consider these methods with great importance and have "advanced technology in place to stop such events from occurring," the expert continued.

"This is most likely a surprising - and unfortunate - isolated incident."
